The Destruction of the Memory of Jewish Presence in Eastern Europe; A Case Study: Former Yugoslavia

- Interview with Ivan Ceresnjes

The successor states of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia provide a good case study of many aspects of the process of memory destruction. All successor states are rewriting their histories. The memory of the Holocaust is thus also fragmented according to the national context. It is important that the physical Jewish infrastructure is not further degraded and that memorial sites in Jewish locations are well kept. For many, the existence of a Jewish memorial does not allow them to forget the crimes of the past.

The Muhammad Al-Dura Blood Libel: A Case Analysis

- Interview with Richard Landes

On 30 September 2000, Charles Enderlin, the Jerusalem-based head of the Middle East Bureau of the French television station France 2, presented sixty seconds of footage of what he described as the killing of a twelve-year-old Palestinian boy named Muhammad al-Dura targeted by Israeli soldiers. The Muhammad al-Dura affair took a dramatic turn in May 2008 when a French appeals court found that Philippe Karsenty was innocent of having defamed Enderlin when he had claimed that the images shown by France 2 of the killing of al-Dura were staged.

Changing Jewish Communities

The Contemporary Rivalry over the Chosen People:
Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Perspectives

- Avi Beker

The idea of the Chosen People occupies a central place in Jewish tradition and liturgy and should be viewed as the key defining concept of Judaism. It also remains, however, the central unspoken and explosive psychological, historical, and theological problem at the heart of Jewish-Gentile relations.

Muslims and Jews in Switzerland

- Simon Erlanger

There has so far been no openly anti-Jewish mass movement among Muslims. Kurds, Turks, and Bosnians tend to be more secular and friendlier toward Jews than Arabs from North Africa and the Middle East. Certain Muslim groups want to learn from the established Jewish community how to gain legal, political, and social acceptance in Switzerland. Muslims have not been the driving force behind the Swiss version of the new Europe-wide anti-Semitism. However, there is a growing radicalization of disaffected Muslim youth, with Islamism gaining ground among certain groups.

Behind the Humanitarian Mask: The Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews

- Manfred Gerstenfeld, Editor

Behind the Nordic countries' appearance and oft-proclaimed concern for human rights lurk darker attitudes. This book deals mainly with lifting the humanitarian mask as far as Israel and Jews are concerned. Thirteen essays and interviews discuss various aspects of the attitudes of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland toward Israel and the Jews.

Academics Against Israel and the Jews

- Manfred Gerstenfeld, Editor

The new century has seen many attempts to discriminate against Israel, its academic institutions, and its scholars in several Western countries. This includes boycotting Israeli universities and academics as well as calling for divestment from Israeli securities. The campaigns frequently use anti-Semitic motifs and sometimes also involve violent anti-Semitic acts. Eighteen essays from four continents discuss a variety of cases of discrimination and how Israel and Jews can defend themselves against such initiatives. Foreword by Natan Sharansky

The Fight for Jerusalem: Radical Islam, the West, and the Future of the Holy City by Dore Gold

- Reviewed by Isi Leibler

The author argues convincingly that proposed concessions of Israeli control over Jerusalem will pave the way for Islamic radicals and terrorists to make further demands and will strengthen the forces behind the global jihad, including Al-Qaeda.

Jihad and Jew-Hatred: Islamism, Nazism, and the Roots of 9/11 by Matthias Küntzel

- Reviewed by Amnon Lord

German scholar Matthias Küntzel argues that the origins of the Islamist terror of recent years, which culminated in the attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001, and of the radical anti-Semitic ideologies of Hamas, Hizballah, Iran, the Palestine Covenant, and Al-Qaeda, lie in the lethal link between Islamism and Nazism.

Major Anti-Semitic Motifs in Arab Cartoons

- Joël Kotek

The main recurrent motif in Arab cartoons concerning Israel is "the devilish Jew." This image conveys the idea that Jews behave like Nazis, kill children and love blood. The similarity with themes promulgated by the Nazis is evident. Many Arab cartoons praise suicide bombing or call for murder. The collective image of the Jews thus projected lays the groundwork for a possible genocide.

Antisemitism Embedded in British Culture

- Interview with Robert S. Wistrich

The anti-Zionist narrative probably has greater legitimacy in Great Britain than in any other Western society. Antisemitism of the "anti-Zionist" variety has achieved such resonance, particularly in elite opinion, that various British media are leaders in this field. The UK holds a pioneering position in promoting academic boycotts of Israel. The same is true for trade-union efforts at economic boycotts. There is also no other Western society where jihadi radicalism has proved as violent and dangerous as in the UK.

"Jerusalem: Capital of the Jews": The Jewish Identity of Jerusalem in Greek and Roman Sources*

- Rivkah Fishman-Duker

For ancient Greek and Roman pagan authors, Jerusalem definitely was a Jewish city. It is noteworthy that despite the negative views of Jews and Judaism expressed by authors such as Manetho, Apion, Tacitus and Juvenal, the Jewish identity of Jerusalem is always clear and never a subject of dispute. These ancient texts, therefore, disprove recent attempts by Muslims and others to deny the historic connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem and the location of the Temple in Jerusalem through fabrications and lies.

Secondary Anti-Semitism: From Hard-Core to Soft-Core Denial of the Shoah

- Clemens Heni

The core principle of secondary anti-Semitism is the refusal or rejection of remembrance of the unprecedented crime which Germans committed during the Second World War, namely the Shoah. This has a specific dimension in Germany which basically reflects the country's unique political culture. The cruelest version of secondary anti-Semitism is Holocaust denial. Three categories of soft-core denial are proposed: distortion, universalization and projection of guilt/relativization/trivialization.

Hunting Nazi Criminals; Operation: Last Chance

- Interview with Efraim Zuroff

In 2002, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Israel (SWC) and the Targum Shlishi Foundation of Miami, Florida launched Operation: Last Chance to help facilitate the prosecution of Nazi war criminals, primarily in post-Communist Europe. Operation: Last Chance is not only an attempt to help achieve justice, but also part of the struggle for historical truth, and was designed to help promote Holocaust education and combat anti-Semitism.

Holocaust Denial as an Anti-Zionist and Anti-Imperialist Tool for the European Far Left

- Dave Rich

The growth of an antiglobalization, anti-imperialist political movement has created a political space on the Left in which Holocaust denial is no longer taboo, if framed in an anti-Zionist context. Mainstream Holocaust commemoration is increasingly under attack as a Zionist or imperialist tool. For some leftists, the contradiction between their antifascism and their anti-Zionism is solved by casting Jewish communities and the European far Right as political allies.

Christian Friends and Foes of Israel:
What Motivates Them?

- David Parsons

Christian friends of the Jewish people have supported the Zionist movement since its inception. Today as well they play an important role worldwide in building support for Israel. On the other hand, a variety of leaders among certain Protestant denominations are rapidly emerging among the main adversaries of Israel. What theological and other reasons are behind their motivations?

"Israel Studies Comes of Age:
Will it Transform the American Academy?"

- Dr. Mitchell G. Bard

Over the last two to three decades, Arabs have invested large sums of money in order to influence how the Middle East is taught on American college campuses.  This has begun to change slowly over the last five years as philanthropists have begun to invest in the burgeoning field of Israel studies and to establish centers and chairs. Visiting Israeli professors are now transforming campuses by presenting perspectives rarely heard at many universities and their impact is such that several schools are now creating permanent positions.

Jewish Perspectives on Genetic Engineering

- Akiva Wolff

The use of genetic engineering is advancing and expanding rapidly in many traditional fields including medicine and agriculture, as well as new fields such as biotechnology. Along with the rapid advances and expansion, there is a growing discussion and debate over the benefits and risks of genetic engineering and the difficult ethical questions raised by this new technology.
